Ep. 50! How to Get Your Big Idea Off the Ground (Even If You Don’t Feel Ready)

Updated: Jul 6

One year. Fifty episodes. Countless aha moments. This week on Insights From the Couch, we’re celebrating our one-year anniversary and the release of our 50th episode—and we're getting real about what it takes to bring a big idea to life.Spoiler alert: You don’t have to feel ready. In fact, we didn’t. When we first had the idea to start this podcast, we had no clue what we were doing. We didn’t have a production team, a tech-savvy bone between us, or a perfectly mapped-out plan. But we had something better: a willingness to start messy, stay committed, and figure it out along the way.

The Myth of Readiness

Women—especially at midlife—are often conditioned to wait until we’ve collected all the degrees, certifications, or perfectly formatted plans before making a move. But the truth? Confidence is built in the doing. And perfectionism will keep you stalled. If you’re holding a big idea close to your chest—whether it’s writing a book, launching a business, going back to school, or taking on a creative project—the best thing you can do is start before you're ready.

Here’s What Helped Us Get Our Idea Off the Ground:

·       1. Willingness Over Confidence

You don’t need to feel confident—you just need to be willing. Courage is taking action even when you're scared or uncertain.

·       2. Start Messy

Our first few episodes were full of tech mishaps, mic stands made out of books, and a lot of winging it. But that’s how you learn. There is no clarity without action.

·       3. Build Distress Tolerance
Fear of embarrassment, failure, or imperfection is real. But it’s survivable. In fact, stretching through discomfort is how you grow the muscles needed to do hard things.
·       4. Take Imperfect Action

There’s no magic moment when you’ll feel completely ready. Waiting for one only delays your dream. Take one small step. Then another.

·       5. Grow Your Capacity for Work

Execution takes focus, energy, and commitment. If that feels hard, start with small bursts. Set a timer. Create a weekly rhythm. Build the habit of showing up.

And One More Thing: Surround Yourself with Supportive Women

We could not have done this without each other. Collaboration, accountability, and emotional safety matter. If you’re trying to get your big idea off the ground, seek out people who cheer you on, challenge you kindly, and lift you up.

Whether you want to launch a podcast or finally say yes to something that’s been tugging at you for years—this episode is your permission slip to begin.

Let this be the year you get your big idea off the ground.
